Randall Gilbreath Custom Handmade “Tulip” Damascus Folding Knife. Unique Wheel Opening Mechanism Excellent Condition. Custom folding knife by maker Randall Gilbreath of Dora, Alabama features beautiful ladder pattern Damascus blade. Handle is multi-hued anodized titanium with orange peel finish over titanium frame with blue anodized titanium liners. In place of bolsters are sculpted “wheels”. The unique wheel opening mechanism is similar to using a flipper, but in this case the index finger draws back on the filed tang spine to draw the blade open. The filed tang belly now serves as a thumbrest. Nicely contoured handle with a comfortable grip. Opening is smooth, lockup is solid, and blade is well centered. This knife measures about 5-1/8″ closed and 9″ opened. See the pictures to judge the condition of the knife for yourself; I would call it excellent condition overall; appears unused. No box or paperwork, but will come in a padded zipper pouch. This knife is from an estate sale; see my other auctions for more knives from this collection by a longtime knife collector. These are separate entities and the sales are not transferable. HOW OUR DAMASCUS IS MADE: All our Damascus is real and not just an acid etch. Damascus is a mixture of 1084HC and 15N20 nickel carbon. You heat them up together and then fold the bar over and over to get the desired layers, ours are 396 layers. Then you burn the blade in acid, and it turns the nickel satin color and the high carbon turns blackish gray. This is how the layers are exposed to show the layers of the new steel created coined “Damascus”. All Damascus is acid etched to show the layers. If you high polish the metal it will be shinny satin like all steels. Only after you burn the sides of the blade with acid do you see the layers of the two steels. After we make our knives we high polish the handles and put an edge on the blade. The high polishing buffs off the acid burned layer of the handle, and the blade edge is sharpened and the acid burned edge becomes satin. You can re-burn the tang of the blade near the handles and the edge of the blade and it will show the layers once more.
