Suchat Jangtanong’s Background before his work is wellknow. Since I was 14 years old, I began my lifelong career by becoming to the third generation in my family as “Knifemaker”. I learned the trade, help my father and grandfather in the knife making our family business in the province of Uthai Thani in Thailand. To continue learning, I attended technical school and after graduating in 1982, worked as an apprentice with a team knife making. It was there where I realize of my ability to carve pearl shell. In 1984, I opened my own workshop. I carry on the tradition of handcrafting each of my knives using only the most basic equipment. I think the beauty of “knife making and cutlery” is being able to feel what you are doing and have a real vision of knife that you create. I make folders with liner lock, as it is my favorite type, with carved and pearl inlay for handle, but it is very hard to work with because of cracking at the slightest mistake. For this reason, the number of knives that I make is very limited and cost more higher since the error can be happen during making. Because most of my knives go in the collections use a lot of Mosaic Damascus (created by welknow damascus maker such as Robert Calcinore, Robert Eggerring). Also sometime I do use D2 or ATS-34 because it is strong and good for everyday use. I can also able to make other lock type like balisongs, lock back to give a variety of my work. This LOT is a beautifully crafted Custom Made Damascus Steel Survival TRACKER , BOWIE, FOLDING, KARAMBIT Knife. Damascus for this knife was created by forge welding multiple layers of steel into a solid block called a billet (15N20 & 1095 high carbon tool steel). The billet is folded and re-welded several times to produce several layers. Patterns are created by manipulating the steel during the forge welding process. When acid is added to the blade, it attacks the layers of hard and soft steels differently, highlighting the attractive layered pattern in the steel. The combination of layered hard and soft steel creates blade flexibility, toughness and produces invisible serrations on the blade that aid in cutting. The hardness of the Damascus steel is 55-60 HRC on the Rockwell scale. The handle of this knife is made out of Buffalo Horn with Copper Bolster. This knife comes with a custom leather sheath. These handmade knives are uniquely made and no one knife is ever like the other, giving each knife it’s original character. Knife Care Tips: Care Damascus steel properly to prevent rust. To prevent rust here are some tips; do not store knife for long periods in the leather sheath. If you wash the knife, do so in warm soapy water. Therefore, do not soak knife in water. Wash and dry immediately. Oil or wax the blade to prevent rust also wrap in a soft cloth and store. Wipe excess oil or wax before placing in the leather sheath. For long term storage, store knife with the leather sheath, not in it. Do not use oils with silicone in it, as this can cause rust. If rust appears, rub the blade with a metal polish like Brasso or a very fine steel wool, then oil or wax the blade. Wood handles usually benefit from a light coating of furniture wax and a good hand rubbing. In conclusion, some recommended oils and waxes for the protection and lubrication of the blade. Camellia oil, mineral oil, carnauba wax or simple vaseline. While some may rather use other oils and applications, these are safe to use and will not harm you if you were to have residue on the blade while some other applications maybe harmful if consumed. Also, for chef knives, you can simply use cooking oil. Therefore, never misuse your knife. With proper care and usage, your knife will last for generations.
